Job Purpose and Impact

The Scientist – Chemical Characterization works within Cargill’s Chemical Characterization team, part of Core R&D, a central research function for Cargill’s global businesses. This highly-skilled global team identifies and quantifies chemical compounds in applications that range from asphalt to infant formula. We are creative problem solvers leaning into our deep analytical chemistry expertise and contextual knowledge to drive innovation. In this role you will be responsible for handling routine analysis, starting with initial client request and consultation. You will then use a variety of laboratory instrumentation and complex analytical methods to generate results and provide actionable information.  Additionally, this role is responsible for some administrative work associated with keeping the lab running safely and efficiently.

Key Accountabilities

  • Handle regular analysis requests. When needed, translate requester needs into specific analytical methods.
  • Prepare analytical samples, standards and properly dispose of waste in accordance with guidelines in a high safety focused environment.
  • Use a variety of laboratory instrumentation and complex analytical methods to isolate, identify and quantify compounds of interest.
  • Identify and provide resolution in analytical instrumentation maintenance. Keep the regular analysis lab running efficiently
  • Execute sample loading, processing and chromatographic problem resolution and effectively communicate results to diverse scientific teams.
  • Independently solve moderately complex issues with minimal supervision, while escalating more complex issues to appropriate staff.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of two years of related work experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Basic technical knowledge in Analytical Chemistry and sterile techniques
  • Experience working in a commercial plant or piloting facility
  • Background in Chemistry
  • Experience with Chromatography
